Show DIGGING UP WOOL-IMPORT FRAUDS. The customs officials at New York have been finding more "pay dirt." For many years the custom house had been sort of running itself; Uncle Sam was collecting all the revenue he required and if importers cheated him he winked at it, Now he needs the money and he is looking into their little tricks. The big importers of English woolen goods are his latest catch. The firm of Brooke & Co., an English concern which has been doing a large business in New York for 30 years, has been taken in charge, and a number of others will be prosecuted. It is found that they have for years been defrauding the government by undervaluing imports im-ports and thus paying less than the proper duty. It is estimated that suits to recover about $10,000,000 will be brought. |
