Show TRADE -REVIEWS OF THE WEEK NEW YORK, Nov. 2C Bradstreet'a tomorrow w.ll say: Demand for holiday goods Is becoming becom-ing more prominent and developments In this respect aro responsible" for whatever expansion has occurred in trade this week- But, on the other hand, trade in general has become more Irregular. In the central west trade shows a zllght Increase, but In the east tho turn over Is disappointing. Incidentally, the prominence noted In the Iron and steel trades last week has hern replaced by less optimistic views. For one thing, considerable disappointment Is reported at tho slowness with which the railways are coming , into the market for supplies and pig iron has turned somewhat quieter. Business .failures In the United States for the week were 231, acainst 218 last week and 217 last year. Dun's Review. NEW YORK. Nov. 23. R. G Dun & Co.'s weekly review of trade tomorrow will say; Business moves along lines of safet)', the absence of speculation making the situation dull. The volume of trans-i trans-i actions, although by no means as large as it m.Vht be if expanded to lull syeed limits, Is nevertheless sufficiently suf-ficiently large to keep the reat body of workmen occupied, so that the average av-erage of prosperity Is fair. That the mass of people st.111 have spending power is evidenced by the hopeful anticipations concerning the holiday trade now oening. Buying of equipment by tho railroads develops slowly, yet considerable new business Is in sight and a more hopeful feeling picvails In iron and steel. The primary pri-mary cotton goods markets are quiet, but the high costs of production tend to hold prices firm Trade In staple prints ?s fair; bleaching goods urn quiet and firm; glnKhams hold steady, and the leading duck mills have secured more business than for a year. In woolens nnd wor. sleds the demand for spot shipments of overcoatings Is good in some quarters, quar-ters, but suitings arc quiet and there is complaint of the effect of strikes in the west, which cause cancellations. New business in footwear is small nnd trade continues quiet, but a good indication for the future is the greater activity of wholesalers in most parts ef the country. The leather markets continue steady, hides show less activity ac-tivity than for domestic and foreign varieties |
