Show MERCHANTS Ml CLOSE ON SMUT Tho Ogden retail clerks, having gained a partial victory in their campaign for early closing Saturday ; lights, have not given up th fight against the few merchants who have held out against tho new plan, but have taken a new tack, aiming this time nt those who are In the custom of keeping their etores open Sunday. It happens that most of those who are not in favor or closing Saturday evenings are also those who favor keeping open Sundays. According to the city ordinance It Is not lawful to conduct certain lines of business Sunday and the penalty ranges from a flno of $5 to to one of $lor. With this fact in mind, the clerks, through Secretary Crompton, swore out complaints yesterday against a number of merchants on lower Twenty-fifth street charging them with keeping their stores open Sundays Sun-days contrary to law Those charg ed In the complaints Include U. Wolf, Dald Rosenthal, William Hcnowltz, Joseph Benowlts and tho proprietors of the Montana Loan office. "When a new edict of this kind goes forth." said one merchant last evening, "notice Is usually served through tho police as In the case of tho saloon keepers when Sunday and twelve-o'clock closing was decided upon. up-on. They dldn t swoop down on the saloon men as if they wero a bunch of criminals and serve them with official-appearing warrants of arrest. Tho police simply notified them that the new order was to go into effect In our caso yesterday, however, ono would think that we had committed somo dreadful crime Instead of endeavoring en-deavoring to earn an honest living." |
