Show TAFT EXPLAINS POWER OF EAST Washington, March 31. President Taft, In an address before the Ohio society yf Washington tonight pointed out that the domination of eastern slates in congress lies In tho fact that they keep men in office when they place them there. He contrasted the Influence of the east in executive affairs with that of the west. "Why is it. asked the President, "the small states of tho east exercise so much power in congress? It Is not because an eastern man has any moro capacity in tho matter of legislation than a western man. It is because, when the eastern states get a good representative they keep hiru as lou us he lives, and then he has an influence influ-ence that vastly exceeds the mere numerical nu-merical representative of population. "I don't know whether this Is qulto germane to the subject of this occasion, occa-sion, but it occurs to me to say this because I feel as though wo are all Interested In having Ohio well ropr- j sented. and In having Ohio make herself her-self felt In the legislation of this country coun-try by adopting a system that will certainly bring about the weight ho Is entitled to." When the President had concluded. Senator Dick, who was on the platform, plat-form, grasped his hand and shook it c-nthusiastically. The senator whose term expires with this congress and who has a hard fight ahead for reelection re-election said something to Mr. Talt. v.ho laughed aloud and said to the ;is-sembluge ;is-sembluge of men and women from his native state: "Senator Dick lias Just told me that he heartily Indorses everything I havo said on this subject." The President as the guest of honor at a meeting called to organize. an Ohio society In Washington. Justice Jus-tice William R Day presided, and subsequently sub-sequently was elected president or the society. "There is only one thing I want to say about Ohio that has a political tings." he said, "and that Is I think a mistake has been made of recent years In Ohio in falling to continue as our representatives the same people peo-ple term after term. I am for continuing contin-uing the representation as wo have It. so that the representatives shall hi; the foremost in both balls of the leg-irlature." |
