How William 1L Ruckley accelerator of insurance legislation and of tbe late "Andy" Hamilton, keeper of the life insurance yellow dog" fund of former years worked shoulder to shoulder oiling , executive wheuls at AJbany, was brought out today at the flro insur- ' ence inquiry conducted by William j JL Hotchklss, state superintendent of insurant. ' Hamilton, the evidence showed, re-celved re-celved no less than $5,999 from cor- , tain companies In 1901. Hamilton's name was put on the record through tho testimony of Henry C- Wilcox, vice president of tho American Surety company. In 1901, Wilcox testified, tho fire insurance companies caused to ho introduced In the legislature a bill to exempt unearned premium reserves re-serves from taxation. Mr. Wilcox wanted to have the casualty and surety sure-ty companies included In the exemption exemp-tion and accordingly went to Albany, lie tried to get Senator Raines and ARsemblyniiui Iowis interested, but failed. Then he hunted np Buckley i and told him his troubles. Buckley, he said, told him that Ham-Ulon Ham-Ulon was the one to help him. Buckley Buck-ley telephoned to Hamilton and said Hamilton agreed to take H. Wilcox left Albany and tho amendment amend-ment went through as desired. When it was all over, Hamilton snt a bill for $10,000 to tho American Surety company. "Did ho tell you he bad lo pay out any of the money?'' the witness was asked. "He conveyed to me the suggestion that ho had assumed obligations which hi? could not meet iiuIcas the full amount wero paid." This was as strong as Mr. Wilcox would put It. He thought the bill too large, but as a compromise, he said, ho sent three checks to Hamilton, aggregating ag-gregating $S.469. Iit-r the national surlty company paid $2,330 o Hamilton. |
