Show SMS OGOEN H BEHIND JMBINE i SALT LAKE, Mar X That the local lo-cal agents of EccW and Browning of Ogden, promoters- and builders of the new market place" between Second West and Third Wt streets and Sec. nnd South and Third South streets, are endeavoring to use public, authority author-ity to further private Interests, as opposed op-posed t tho interest of the Independent Independ-ent produce men, Is the charge made by W. A. Cooper of. the Kahn-Coopor Fruit company, 69 South West Temple street. That the produce men of the city , are In league to fix all prices at which produce is to be sold on the local market mar-ket to the retail trade Is another charge made by. Mr. Cooper, and ho further declares that the combination Is of such a character that an investigation investi-gation by the grand Jury would not be barren of results. ' The city council has been asked by James Johnson, who Is said to; have promoted the market scheme, to forbid for-bid produce wagons from standing at any point, in the city except in the stalls arranged for them at the market mar-ket place. . v Farmers for the last twenty-five years, according to Mr. Cooper ha vo been allowed to stand during certain. hours of the morning on West Temple street, between South. Temple ptreet and First South street." This location is convenient of access to "market row," between Main street and West Temple Btreet. and business men of that street have" had the convenience of having the farmers bring their produce almost to their doors. "The promoters of the . . market place scheme," said Mr. Cooper this morning, "want to force the fanners to occupy the stall they have arranged at the market place at, a monthly rental of $6. ' Tho conveniences that are provided for tho farmers at that point are Just the 6ame as they are in this street There Is no protection for the horses, and there is nothing that they have not right here, "But that is beside the question. The proposition is simply this; Tbey want to force all the farmers to their private property and tax them to such ,an extent that the privilege of standing stand-ing in the street will give the promoters pro-moters a revenuo of from 5800 to 11,000 a month. Tn addition they ask tho city to flush the street and keep It lu good condition, without return to tho city. . 4 ' It is a fine thing for the promoters of the, market place,;ul not so good for the commission,, man, who wants to retain his independence.. ;- |
