Show GOVERNOR'S DAY AT THE BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY I'rovo. May 21. Thl la Governor's (Jay at the Prlgham Young University, and It la being celebrated with great enthusiasm on tho part of old and young. They were then escorted to the milv'crsltv, being greeled on the way by about 1.000 chool children, who were lined upon the streets. On reaching the university the parly wa3 taken to College hall, where about 1.000 students were assembled to witness wit-ness lh exorcises. The guesls wero seated on tho tand, and an soon as this was done the whole audience rose and rang "America" under the leader-fblp leader-fblp of Prof. A. C. Lund. The invocation invoca-tion was offered by Prof. A. Osmond, which waa followed by a vocal selection selec-tion by the B. Y. U. choiu. President George II. Hrlihhnll ihen delivered tho address of welcome; in l he court-e of which he raid that the faculty and students represented 15 srutes In the union and two foreign countries. President Uriml'.a'.l. The governor expressed his appreciation of the good work '.hat Is being done by the men and women who have graduated gradu-ated from tho II. Y. university, and who ,'tro an honor, to the Institution. He also spoke of the adversity and trials through which the Institution had struggled, ami paid hlsh compliments compli-ments to Dr. Measer. the first president presi-dent of the institution. He praised the students for their work in beautl-r,i..rf beautl-r,i..rf Mm .ri-miruln nnrl referred to the changed feeling of the people of the east and west towards Utah. lie also spoke of the splendid work now, being done by Senator Smoot in' the senate, where he Is t recognized as u groat authority "on th'e tariff question. He referred to conversation with a gentleman on his last trip east, who told. him that he considered there was no one In tho senate better able to fill Uio ltosition of secretary of the trea surv than Senator Smoot, who Is also a graduate of the M. Y. U, He also spoke In terms of praise of Senator Sutherland, who Is also an alumnus of this Institution, and others who are filling honorable positions In tho field of endeavor at home and abroad. After a selection by tho P. Y. U. band, General Wedgwood made a number num-ber of humorous remarks which put, tho audience in extreme good humor, ending with a serious talk on tho value of education in accomplishing the world's work. The puosls were then taken through all tho departments or the school, ending end-ing with a visit to the domestic science sci-ence department, where a substantial feast was provided. This afternoon the party is being taken to the M. Y. IT. farm, which was donated by "Unclo" Jesse Knight. This evening a grand ball will be given In the college gymnasium. |
