Show LOCAL FORCE IS BEING REDUCED FOREST SERVICE HEADQUARTERS HEADQUAR-TERS SUFFERS CURTAILMENT. i Fiscal Agent Making Sweeping Changes by Cutting Down .Office Force and Adding to Field Service. The Forest Service Is making sweeping changes in the distribution of its employes in an effort to eliminate elim-inate "red tape" and reduce the operating oper-ating expenses to a minimum, applying ap-plying a greater portion of the annual an-nual appropriation in field work, where, in reality, it is considered rightfully to belong. Fiscal Agent H. B. Cramer, of Washington, D. C, arrived In the city today for a series of conferences with tho officers of the district forest, service for the purpose of extending the policy of operatlng-expeuso reduction reduc-tion to tho local field. The local office has already given up six of Its rooms on the" fourth j floor of the First National Dank building build-ing and the entire force Is now quar- tered upon the fifth floor. The new policy is not considered one of retrenchment, but is Intended to eliminate "red tape" wherever possible . There has been no reduc-tloji reduc-tloji in the amount of the annual appropriation ap-propriation but as a greater amount was not secured from congress, as anticipated, it has been deemed important im-portant Uiat loss be 'expended for operating expenses in the way of clerical help etc., and that more be sppnl for supplying an adequate force of supervisors, rangers and tire-fl2;ht;?rs in tho field. This policy is following the idea expressed by President Roosevelt before his term of office expired and the changes are being made in the department at Washington aa well as in all the district offices in the west. |
