Show THE HONORABLE DUNCAN UP-SHAW UP-SHAW FLETCHER, NEWLY ELECTED ELECT-ED UNITED STATES SENATOR FROM FLORIDA Washington, Jan. IS. Among tho new senators who will take their oath of office on March 1, 1900, will be Hon. Duncan Ups'naw Fletcher from Florida. Senator Fletcher Is one of the foremost public men in this southern stato, a self made man, who has won his seat without the help of outside Intluences, except as he himself has gained them by his own strength of character, Industry In-dustry and perseverance. Senator Fletcher was born in Sump-ter Sump-ter county just 50 years ago. Ho wan educated at Gordon institute. Barns-vlllo, Barns-vlllo, Ga., and later entered Vander-bllt Vander-bllt university at Nashville, Tenn , where he took the collegiate course. He has alway done a general law practice, prac-tice, and confined himself to no spec-Lalty. spec-Lalty. He has always taken a public spirited interest in the affairs of his city and state, and soon became one of the -first citizens of Jacksonville. He has held several public offices, but the crowning feature of his life was his nomination on June 10 in the primaries of his stato, for United States senator. Mr. Fletcher Is an ardent advocate' of the waterways movement and recently re-cently went to Washington to the national na-tional rivers and harbors congress, where he took an active part.
