Tho tenement house district ot the southern south-ern section of the city, covering an area of nearly a square mile and occupied oc-cupied mainly by foreigners, employed employ-ed In the cotton mills and shoe factories, fac-tories, was swept by fire today. Within With-in two hours, fifty buildings had been destroyed or damaged In the area from Elm street eastward to Reach Htreet and from Auburn street north to Cedar. A gale waj blowing, and soon after the outbreak, help was asked from Concord, Nashua, Lowell. Portsmouth, Dover and Rochester. With the aid of te firemen thus summoned, the conflagration was under control at one o'clock. The loss is estimated at $100,000. Fully 2.000 persons were made homeless. The fire continued to spread, the gale driving the flames and firebrand 8 afar. At one o'clock the burning area Included the square bounded by Elm street on the west and Pine street east, Cedar street north. Forty bulld-lngB bulld-lngB were burned or damaged. At 1:30 o'clock, the fire was re-ported re-ported under control. Fifty or sixty buildings wero wholly or partially damaged and the loss was estimated at from $100,000 to $150,000. |
