Show NAME 'PHAETON' HOREPOPULAR 'Touring Car' Has Lost Much of Its Original Meaning During the last ten years automobile automo-bile makers halve used many nanus for more or less standard types of body which have had only a temporary tempo-rary anil sporadic popularity, but the name ' phjacton," which Is now beln used by many companies for the fou five and seven-pnssenger open-type cars, has been adopted to such an ex--tent by the car-owning public and manufacturers that It can be recognized recog-nized as a permanent addition to our automobile nomenclature. The chancre from the -word "touring car" to the word "phaeton" Is probably due to the Increase in the use of sedans, coupes and other closed cars for tourlnc. Thus the name "touring car" has lost Its original meaning, according to a bulletin just Issued by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The name "phaeton" Is now usod for the four pas.senp;er open-type body by Brewster. Cadillac Kss-x. Hudson, Lincoln, National. Mormon. Packard, Fecrjess, I'rernh r and l'.eo, for tho five-passenger Open-type car by Brewster. Brew-ster. Cadillac, Essex. Inquiries show that many other companies are studying the advisability ad-visability of changing from the name "touring car" to "phaeton" and wul probably make the change In their 1913 catalogs and In siabsenuent advertising. ad-vertising. It has been stated that the word "phaeton" will not be used as the public pub-lic does not understand Its meaning.
