Show SAND LOTTEHS NOW USINCS FREAKS Potts Says Kid Tvirlers Are Using All Sorts of "Spitters" : The spitball, shiner and all other artificialities of the pitching trade soon will be history. They're banned in tho major leagues and In some of the minors, and now all indications point to tho enacting of similar legislation by the National Baseball Federation when the sandlot moguls gather in Cleveland Cleve-land in the middle of the summer. jfTho sandlotters follow close onto the heels of the big leagues. They use the big league, playing rules. On first thought you might not consider such action very important, impor-tant, but did you know the woods was full of spitballers, shine-ball artists and others employing tricks of delivery? Johnny Potts, secretary of the Federation, a former Federal (League star and college coach. Is authority au-thority for the assertion. "The kith pitcher.are always trying to copy the big league stars," says Potts. "He is generally judged by tho 3cope of his curve, the spltter and the shiner. The woods are full of them. It's the same way with the college s'tars they're all trying the spitter." But it Is better for the younsters to lay off such deliveries if they ev-'pect ev-'pect to get up in the baseball profession. pro-fession. Such tricks will do them good when they get tryouts with the clubs of organized baseball. That makes it pretty tough, of course, on some of the ex-professional stars, who are now in tho sand-lot sand-lot game, and who are employing freak deliveries in puzzling their opponents. op-ponents. Dut these fellows are few and thoy have the same warning to cut it out that the major leaguers have. The federation cannot tako any action that would be effective this year. But, no doubt, all freak deliveries will be taboo in every organized or-ganized sandlot city next season, j And already the Cleveland Amateur Ama-teur Baseball Association has banned tho freak deliveries. They're allowing allow-ing former spitballers to retain their most offerings for the remainder of this season. But there can bo no more than two to a team. Cleveland is one of tho strong cities of the association, and whatever action ac-tion the C. 'A. B. A. takes generally is passed on in the other cities. nn. |
