Show I HIGH SCHOOL CADETS. ' ' ' 'I I ' . This country of ours never will be as unprepared to meet an enemy as it was in 1917: All over the United States school boj's are drilling, learning the manual of arms and studying the problems of military maneuvers. Within a few years -millions of young men, other-than those who were in the cantonments, in response to their country's call, between 1917 and 1919, will ba made proficient in the fundamentals of military efficiency. Here in Ogden the High School Cadets give an idea of how thoroughly the boys of America are being trained plvysically and prepared pre-pared mentally to serve their country, if need be. There are over 250 youngsters who march with a militarj' swing. They are supplied' sup-plied' with equipment, including the khaki uniforms they wear, and they are instructed by officers out of the regular arm'. They arc rounding into an organization which, on dress parade, performs in a most admirable manner. This coming June, 2S of the cadets will be selected on merit "marks to go to the Presidio encampment, where for six weeks they will have camp life and be under the direct supervision of officers f of exceptional ability. Their expenses, including transportation and ! clothing Anil be furnished by the United States, and, at the end of j the training period, they will be given expense mone3r'and allowed a I period' of sightseeing. This is making soldiering an attractive di-1 di-1 1 version. No one wants the military spirit cultivated beyond the point I of necessity and yet, while other nations continue large military es-I es-I j tablishments, it is well for the people of the United States to cease 1 1 to flatter themselves as being so powerful in numbers as to require i no training. It is to be hoped the day will come when there will be a thor- x" ough understanding between nations and .swords will be turned into pruning knives, but in the meantime, let us avoid trusting to an-r, an-r, thing less assuring than fitness to perform. I Of course, in military glamour there is a powerful suggestion leading on to the day when a country, armed to teeth, will desire to ; .swagger and overawe. But, while we teach military tactics, we can ; preach the gospel of peace and decry the purelj' military spirit. It. |
