The full report of the librarian follows: fol-lows: To the Board of Directors of tho Carnegie Car-negie Free Library: Gentlemen: 1 have the honor to submit herewith my report of the work of the Carnegie iee library for tho fiscal year ending May 31, 1020. i he year just ended has been the most successfui in the history of the library, our efficiency having been in- , i eased in many lines, ami vhe use of the library by the. people of Ogden ueing more extensive t!imi ever heron . We have added 2CS0 new books, enabling en-abling us to complete our service iu the school children of Ogden, by plating plat-ing books in every school room in the j grammar grades. Including the Industrial Indus-trial school, supplying one book to ; each child, our school circulation gnt-s evidence that our plan of making 'every teacher u librarian" Is a wrv successful one. We have' loaned for , boiue .ise from the schools JU.OfiS books. Added to our total of circulu-jtlon circulu-jtlon from the library, this gives uh a Uotal of 12L331 booK3 loaned during I the year. This does not include, the 1 oooks used in the library or show the ( excellent service the library is giving in roferenco work. j 255 Books Stolen, j We regret to report tho loss of 3S71 books, of which 255 were stolen from, !the library. We sincerely hope that the library will soon bo in a position' to install a more practical loan desk, allowing a more perfect supervision of, 'all parts of the library and providing, only, one . entrance and one exit to the stack room. At present the at-1 tendant at the loan desk cannot over-jsce over-jsce the largo number of patrons entering en-tering the library and leaving by the (various exits. However, wo would ! rather lose books, ill as we can afford their loss, then to deny free access to ! the stacks. i i Last summer tho librarian and Miss I Llttlefield of the children's department depart-ment attended the American Library , association . meeting and did summer school work at Columbia University. The further training and inspiration ! in our work afforded through this splendid opportunity has enabled us to do better work this year. The Northern District library meeting meet-ing was held in this library April 15th, with a large attendance of visiting II-' II-' brarians. j Library School. For six weeks beginning April 12, a library school was held in this library li-brary under the supervision of Mi3s Mary L Downey, state library organizer. orga-nizer. The librarian gave Instruction in cataloging and classification, and Miss Littlofleld was lr.tructor in children's chil-dren's and reference work. Nineteen librarians were in attendance, of whom four we're from California and fifteen from Utah libraries. Besides class work, each student did at least one hour daily practical work in tho library. The results were most grati-j tying, the library staff profiting from' tne exchange of ideas and the broad-' ening of interests, and the students! getting an ideal combination ' of theo-1 retical a"hd practical work. I During the past year we have installed in-stalled a filing system for clippings i land pamphlets, which is enabling us! ! to make more use of a mass of mis- Icellaneous material which comes to I i hand. The encouragoment of tho library' board and the hearty co-operation of I the library staff has made possible! the splendid work of tho year. Respectfully submitted, GRACE W. HARRIS, I , Librarian, j |
