Show W. P. Thomas Presents Review Re-view as Affecting Producers of Intermountain Country An article, prepared by W. P. Thomas, Thom-as, county agricultural agent, presenting pre-senting a view of high prices is sud-mltted sud-mltted as follows: "This inter-mountain country is an exporter of livestock, sugar and wheat. The revenue derived from them largc-lv largc-lv supports the people and towns of this section. Although dependent upon up-on these Industries, many of our city friends have been aiding the campaign for a reduction in prices on tho very Articles which we, as a community, have to sell. Wo r.ave been doing fino the hog Industry has been destroyed by cutting the price at least five cents below the cost of production. How many of our farmers are trying to produce pork under present conditions? The cattle man was the next victim; he was foro- kct which Is no higher than prices prevailing pre-vailing in 1914, before tho war. These same cattle have been produced since 1914 at a cost of at least 100 per cent above normal. Is this good business busi-ness for the stockman or the community, commun-ity, and what are the prospects "It was thought that the sheep industry in-dustry might escape for this season and perhap3 bridge us over buC" no here comoa our demand for reduction reduc-tion in wool resulting in a drop in prices from 70 cents to 20 cents and 30 cents. This price is effective when the clip, due to the hard winter, Is about one third short. At 25 cents por pound it will take 200 pounds of wool to buy a S50.00 suit of clothc3. This 200 pound wool will make 65 suJta, or sell for $3,250.00 at 50 per suit. This cheap wool may reduce the high cost of living, temporarily, but what about the western sheep Industry? In-dustry? Pro-war prices for animal products with a 25 per cent los3 due to the unusually severe winter and the cost of production doubled, spells disaster dis-aster to the livestock business. "If wo are successful in reducing the prices of sugar and wheat below the cost of production, our agrlculturo will be in a precarious condition. The results will reflect in every Individual and community in this inter-mountain country." |
