Many Mutterings. Great excitement was caused ly the shooting and there were mutterings of IH furiher trouble. ' Streets Guarded. I fH Early today -hundreds of farmers x frpm the surrounding country came to Lexington to attend the trial. The state troops closely guarded the streets when the negro was taken from a train and rushed lo the courthouse. The prisoner was brought hcVc early this morning from Frankfort on a spe-cial spe-cial train. jH Heavy wires and ropes had- been jH stretched along the streets to prevent 'the crowds from charging the pris-oivu- with his military escort. jH Tho mob is now looting pawnshops. Sixty-two revolvers were taken at one . place. An attack on the troops is I feared by the authorities. The little Hardman girl was found murdered by schoolmates a short dis-tance dis-tance from her home last Tuesday morning, just a few minutes aficr she had t:n'tcd to school. The girl's body had been dr?gged into a corn field and her head had been crushed with a stone. The body had been partly covered up with corn stalks. 1 Within a few minutes posses were formed by residents of the neighbor-hood neighbor-hood and a search was instituted. Lockett was suspected and finally was found late that night at a friend's home about six miles from the scene. He was taken into custody by a Lex ington physician and his friend, lo whom he denied having murdered ti Later, police announced, the negro tM confessed to the murder, adding that he "didn't know" why he had commit-ted commit-ted the crime. |
