Show WAR GARDENS TOBE CVT OFF I FROM WATER SUPPLY OWING j TO DANGER OF WATER FAMINE l Water for war gardens will be cut off entirely, beginning tomorrow, according ac-cording to City Commissioner Chris Flvgare, head of the waterworks department. de-partment. This announcement comes as a re-isult re-isult of the extreme situation existing , in the city with reference to the water I supply. Water in the city reservoir has been drawn very low during the I past two weeks and the cutting off of the war gardens is now the only available avail-able means of conserving the supply. Unless this is done, the commissioner states, it will be only a matter of a few weeks until the city will be with-out with-out fire protection It is a case of 1 sacrificing either the lawns or the war srardens, and it is almost certain that no one citizen would care to sacrifice his lawn I Commissioner Flygare stated that bp 'regretted VetJ much the necessity of this step, even though warning had been giyen when water for the rardens ! was asked for that it was yery likely i that tho flow would have to be cut off lbout the first of August and probably' by tho first of July. Had rain fallen, I as has been expected, it Is quite prob- j able that the water could hae been ! supplied to the gardens for a longer 1 time. This step has been taken in Salt Lake, having been put Into effect thorf about ten days ago. The shutting off of sprinkling in the city parks result ed in raising the water in the reservoir reser-voir about six inches last night, but the watering of the lawns reduced it ! again this morning This clptermlnd the official action in cuttinc off the war gardens as it was evident 'hat no gain could be made and maintained by simply cutting off the parks occa sionally. The city officials stated that they would prefer to continue the water wat-er supply to the war gardens, if there was any wa possible to do so. |
