Show WATER STORAGE IS PLANNED AND COMMITTEE IS TO DE NAMED DV FARM BUREAU A committee of slt. men representing the Weber county farm bureau and the Ogrh n ( ity and Weber county commissioners com-missioners will be appointed either today to-day or tomorrow to outline and carry through some plan for immediately supplying the county with irrigation water and also to secure a reserve supply of water The decision to appoint ap-point such a committee was reached last Saturday afternoon when representatives repre-sentatives of the farm bureau, canal companies, the city and county commissions, com-missions, the Merchants of Ogden and I several Industrial enterprises met in I the federal buildings to discuss the acute water situation in Weber county. The meeting was held under the direction di-rection of .1 L Robson, chairman of the irrigation committee of the Weber county farm bureau. The officers and directors of the farm bureau will hold a meeting either this afternoon or In the morning and will appoint the six members of this committee. As soon as the committee is named, a conference will be called. Presenting the situation as to the .present shortage ot water and the difficulties dif-ficulties being faced by the farmers and by the people of this city, there were talks by President D. D. McKay of the farm bureau. Chairman J. L Robson, Commissioner Miles L. Jones, City Engineer Joseph Tracy, Water Commissioner J A Taj lor and J. S. Lewis. Mr. Lewis advocates not only the building of reservoirs but also the establishment of a municipal lighting system in connection. City Engineer Tracy reviewed the waterrlght conditions in this city and some of the proposals of Ogden regarding re-garding the water development particularly par-ticularly for municipal use. Many of the numerous plans proposed pro-posed by which water could be stored for delivery to this citj and county are considered of a most striking character, char-acter, including the building of reservoirs reser-voirs on the Ogden and Weber rivers-the rivers-the building of a canal from Bear river to Weber county: the development of underground water, pumping from the j mouth of Bear river, and the capping of all artesian wells where the water i is not. being used for beneficial purposes. pur-poses. It is stated that there are now 54.-000 54.-000 acres of tillable land in the county under irrigation, that 50.000 acres more can be drained, and that from 20.000 to 25,000 acres of land can be reclaimed, if thero Ls enough water supply. How to aeeoniplish the matter of draining some of tills land, and the irrigating of other parts, will be one of the mat ters put to the committee. Whether J part of this land will come under the Weber-Provo river project was brought up and discmssed. After much discussion, the following resolutions, which provide for the appointment, ap-pointment, of the committee, was adopted : Resolutions. "Whereas, the crop production of Weber county has in the past, and will this season, be materially decreased due to water shortage, and "Whereas, said production in crop yield for this season would cause a loss which would amount to more 1 than the cost of providing for an am pie supply of water, and "Whereas, this supply can be furnished, fur-nished, irsl b building of reservoirs on tne (Jguen and Weber rivers; sec- j ond, by building of canals from Bear 1 river to Weber county; and, third, the I development of underground water. the pumping from the mouth of Bear 'river, possibly the converting of the northern end of the lake into a reser- j I voir, and the capping of all artesian ! wells where water is not being used for beneficial purposes, therefore, be it "Resolved, that this meeting so on record as favoring that immediate I steps be taken to supply the needed 'water for this country, recommending that a committee of six be appointed, ihree by the Weber county farm bureau, bu-reau, one by Weber county board of commissioners and two by Ogden city, land that this committee be authorized j to investigate the whole field of supplying sup-plying sufficient water for agricultural ' and other purposes for this section, 1 'making use of any or all above men-j men-j tinned possibilities and any other I : sourc e, or sources, that might be advisable, ad-visable, also to raise the necessary i funds for preliminary surveys and or- ganization and that said committee I outline the project and formulate the j pn or plans of organization. "That when said committee has made investigation and prepared plans for supplying additional water, that they report their findings to the in- terested parties, and be ir further "Resolved, that the chairman of this H eeting communicate this resolution to parties mentioned to name committeemen, commit-teemen, asking that they make appointments ap-pointments according to suggestion of this resolution." |
