Rich, who was sent to France last winter by the Federated Women's clubs to act as Y. M. C. A. enter talner The letter was sent to Mrs. R. B. Porter, who is head of the Ogden Og-den chapter of the federated clubs M.1M Rich, who told in her last let- ter of singing before General Pershing not long ago, tells of many of her experiences ex-periences and asks that more songs be sent to her to use in the entertainments. entertain-ments. Her most ir.terestine letter follows "St Nazalre. French. ' Sunday. April 5. 1919. "Dear Mrs Porter: I know you think that I am a perfect scapegoat for not writing you any oftener Lhan I do, but you don't know how impossible letter writing becomes lor an entertaijur In 1 1. i r r . ,1,. I- f V... ink T ' rtainly enjoyed Paris while I was there and was very fortunate in getting get-ting up to Chateau Thierry. Rhelms, Toul and Nancy before coming down i here in the S. O. S. region. "However, St. N'azaire isn't a bad 'place at all when it comes right down to It. It is Just an awful mudhole w hen it rains, to be sure, and it is terrible ter-rible dusty when it doesn't, so the best thing to do Is to be thankful when the Almighty divides things up evenly I enough not to make either too dls-aur-'i-able We have been down here .'since March 19, and expect to be here about a month. When I say 'we' I mean the two other girls in my unit. jThey are both singers, one a soprano, IRuth Hunter of Nashville. Tenn. who 'was a voice teacher In Cincinnati con-iservatory con-iservatory and came over in a straight T. M. C. A. entertainment department. She sings semi classical things, is tall and blonde and very beautiful. The uiui i mir in ucuv rwiui i'w w in vaudeville In New York for several years. She has a mezzo voice and sings straight popular music very well. Is about my build, dark with beautiful brown eyes and hair, and Is the stunning stun-ning "headliner" of our party. I am the manager of our unit as well as the accompanist, and both girls are so sweet and refined and so easy to work and live with that we enjov each other Immensely. Miss Ford was sent out by the Overseas Theatrical league and will 6nly be with us a couple of moro months Besides our regular 'straight program of songs, I do a few numbers on the side with my ukcMe, and the boys seem to go crazy over 'those silly songs, so if you have any more send them over. Concert Every Night "We give a concert every night in the week except Sunday at some camp or other and although the life is pretty pret-ty Htrenuous. I wouldn't change It for anything We have to go out in all kinds of weather, o i r the worst roads you ever saw, In these little stiff Ford trucks and often the buildings wo play in, are cold and drafty full of foul air so thoroughly drenched with Madam-; oiselle Fatima and Camel's breath that! we can hardly sing But the boys seem j to appreciate It so and go Sd complete-' ly wild over all that we do. that we feel more than repaid for coming. A bunch of enlisted men I WSJ talking to last night, after the concert, saw my sign, 'Federation of Women's Clubs' on my sleeve and wanted to know-about know-about it. When I explained, they said to tell you all that that they 'were for you' everytime for sending me. I met lots of boys trom home, not always in bunches, but there are a number scattered through every audience au-dience we sing to. The lirst morning I was here I went down to see some of the 91st division go on board the Kentuckian and 1 have bf.cn to the docks several times since. "We do get in some very nice motor trips, however. One of the colonels here in the hotel took a bunch of us up to Guerande one afternoon last week, and It was a delightful ride up through those quaint little villages with their mossy roofed houses and quaint peasantry. The city of Guerande Guer-ande is most picturesque with its old musty, gray walls and vines growing all ocr them. We drove back by the coast all the way aud it was a glorious glo-rious ride for a bright sun shiny day with the ocean breeze fanning our faces. Day before yesterday we drove up to La Roche and saw a ery quain chateau which is occupied by some noted count and his wife. It is an Immense estate with golf links and tennis courts and miles of stables full of horses. The chateau itself is like a castle surrounded by a moat which Is crossed by a draw bridge. "I don't know yet Just where we will go from here. There Is some talk of our going down to Bordeaux for a month after leaving here, and 1 would I be awfully glad of the chance to go and visit Eva at Bairritz some week . nd, besides they say ihat Bairritz Is a I Jewel of a place to spend 8 vacation. At present we are enjoying ourselves to the fullest extent, living In a nice, comfortable hotel with officers all the way from second lieutenants to brigadier briga-dier generals payinc court to you. besides be-sides singing to the enlisted men reg-I reg-I ularly every night. "My best love to all my friends in Ogden. and especially yourself When I can't write often, remember I am ' thinking about you and wishing I could always devotedly, "GLADYS." |
