Speaking last night in the First Presbyterian church, John Etfward Carver said in part : It was none less than Vice Admiral Sims who said about the best word in favor of the American Red CroSB When speaking before Hi London chapter in October. 1918. he said "I have often heard people sa W hy is li necessary to tare lor sick and wounded soldiers and sailors through an organization like the Red Cross'' Win doesn'i the government take charge ot it?' We have heard il said right ber in Ogden lime and again that the gov-ernmeni gov-ernmeni should pay for and control (he work done bv the Red Cross Bimfi say?: "The fact of the matter Is i hat the government is not capable of doing It in the way the Red Cross does. All government activity, par -1 ticularly this work, is governed by rules and regulations and an auditor. All these rules and regulations are j made with a view to what is likely to happen but all need- cannui be lore. i seen. When emergency turns up we sometimes have not the facilities, sometimes not the legal authority to do all that we ought to do. "The American Red Cross is like a : combination of the president of the lnited States and the cabinet and both the houses of congress. It can make a law as quick as you can write a check. But we of the government service cannot can-not do it at all The emblem of the 'Red Cross is two pieces of red tape jlaid across each other, but so fai as ,1 know that is the only red tape they j have got They can do things unham-! unham-! pered by rules and regulations. When our men are sick or wounded we hi ed quick action, unhampered and fri e That is the great advantage of the Red Gross in time of need. It can do I things and do them at once." The morning press carries a story I that each American should read. It Ts the story of the government asking the Red Cross to found about I illy I Red Cross stations in loreign ports for tne American seamen who shall man i our new navy and merchant maiine. If the soldiers and tailors of the late war were worth caring for then why are not the young Americans who are being asked all over this Union to enlist in naval service. We say a regular soldier and sailor is generally rather worldly or in plain terms, is "rough " Well, then, Ave should either quit asking for soldiers and sailors to serve our flag or else aid to make the conditions of service more conducive to a higher type of American manhood j and that latter is Just what the Red Cross is asked to do and it is going to cost money to support these fifty odd Ki d Gross stations permanently in dis-1 dis-1 tant ports. The Red Gross is just now very busy-along busy-along the Mexican border and it must Stay there as long as the thousands and the press does not tell you how many thousands ot 'hemherc are of soldiers must patrol the border. The Red Cross must finish the work in the Balkans. Serbia and Poland Americans are not quitters and we will j not quit that pob when it means the I very life of so many who are asking i us i'or aid. In Ogden the Red Cross has been asked by all the organizations doing charity work that our local chapter open a confidential exchange for the I reliel work of the county That means tan added expense right here, but it I will save the charitable citizens much more than it will cost the Red Cross j In our home service department during the month ot September nlon a total of J5a cases dealing with service serv-ice men and their families were handled by our workers. This is oone quietly but it is done efficiently. This work must continue for some time. This week there was a typical easel of Red Cross work that Ogden people! know nothing of A company of sol-1 dien were bein.L transferred to the! roast. Tin ii train had been delayed and they were two days late when they reached Ogden from the east. I Their ration money was gone and they a n hungry. Their officer took them into the depot dining room and then I it I- phoned tip R d ross p stood I good for the meals and if not reim-' jbursed will pay for them. Sucli cases! are not at all Infrequent, and tht- R.ni Cross always steps into the breach. |
