Hoover of the United States food administration, received the following fol-lowing appeal from headquarters In Washington; "Seven years ago a famous European student of history prophesied that the next great war of the future would not be won by fighting but by f amino. We are today fighting that war, and famine is indeed threatening to be its arbiter. "The men or England, Scotland, Ireland, Ire-land, France, Italy and Belgium our allies are fighting; they are not on tho farms. Tho production of food by theso countries has therefore been greatly reduced. Even before the war it was much less than the amount consumed. The difference comes more largely from othor countries than from America, Now, this difference differ-ence is greater than ever, and, at the same time, supplies can no longer come rfom the other countries . They must now come from America. Therefore, There-fore, our allies depend on us for food as they never have dopended bo-fore, bo-fore, and they ask us for it with a right which thoy have never had before. be-fore. For today they are doing tho fighting the suffering, and dying In our war. A- "We must send them the food they have to have. We will send it. But we can only do it by a wise and loyal economy of food on the part of every one of us. We must stimulate our food' production, organize our food handling, eliminate all the waste possible, pos-sible, substitute as largely as possible pos-sible other foods for wheat, beef, pork, dairy products and sugar, and reduce consumption where it is excessive. exces-sive. "To accomplish these things Is the problem of the United States food administration. ad-ministration. But this accomplishment accomplish-ment can come only from the combined com-bined personal and voluntary service of all the people of the land. To that end wo want all the people to join the food administration. No fees or dues; merely a promise to help. Send for our membership pledge and our plan." |
