Show oo WHY THE WAR MUST BE' FOUGHT Is victory In this war worth fighting for? To us the answer Is unmistakably unmistaka-bly given in four stories carried by the Associated Press within the last few days. One tells of Belgian women and girls forced ' by German soldiers to build concrete dugouts under fire of. the allied 'guns. The second Is the raising of false alarms as of wounded soldiers in order to get Red Cross stretcher bearers into No Man's Land to' be shot down. The third is Gerard's authenticated confessions of German soldiers who witnessed the massacre of Russian and British troops taken prisonors. The fourth is the slaughter of men and women attempting to escape in lifeboats from Scandinavian ships being be-ing convoyed which were caught by German cruisers off the coast of Sweden. Swe-den. Brutality, even .barbarism, seems to have become a part of the German forces. A world ruled' by a people whose military arm is so lost to every trace of human regard for the helpless help-less who fall victims to Its hate, would be a world constantly overcast with gloom. Better to die fighting than to be subjected to a brutalized mastery which knows no law of right. Better to perish defending the higher high-er ideals of civilization than become debased creatures of tyrants worse than devils. oo |
