POWELL city mm Mrs. Sarah Joyce Powell was buried Saturday in the Ogden City cemetery after a funeral service held In the Marriott ward meeting house conducted con-ducted by Elder John D. Petotaon. Tho speakers at the funeral were H. W. Marriott, George H. Butler, Mrs. VIney R. Barker, Elder James Douglas, Doug-las, President Francis W. Stratford of the North Weber stake and Apostle David 0. McKay. The following musical numbers were rendered: "My Faith In Thee," and "O, My Father," by Edward Saunders; "Face to Face" and "I Know That My Redeemer Re-deemer Lives," by Caleb Marriott; "Sister, Thou Wast Mild and Lovely" and "I Dreamed," by Mrs. T. P. Terry. Sarah Joyce Powell, daughter of Thomas add Mary Ann Ford Joyce and wife of John D. Powell, was born June 24, 18-17, at Wyboston, Bedfordshire, Bedford-shire, England. She died January 30, 1918, at tho family residence In Marriott. Mar-riott. She left England with her father's family, sailing for America on tho ship "Juventa," Saturday, March 31, 1855, from Liverpool. They arrived at Philadelphia Phil-adelphia on May 5. The party, In which there woro 573 Latter-day Saints, .went from Philadelphia to Pittsburg, then by steamship down the Ohio river to St. Louis, Mo., and then up the Missouri river to Atchison, Atchi-son, Kans., to Mormon Grove, where they remained five weeks. The family croBsod the plains with ox teams In Richard Ballantyne's company, arriving In Salt Lake City Tuesday, September 25, 1855. This was tho fourth company of Latter-day Saints to cross the plans that season and consisted of forty -five wagons and 402 persons. The Joyco. family stopped at Kays-Ville Kays-Ville in Davis county for a short time and then located in Marriott, Weber county. In the latter part of the same year. This has since been the family home. I The family took part in the move to tho south when Johnston's armv arrived ar-rived In Utah In 1858. Sarah Joyce was baptized at Marriott In March, 185S, by Pleasant Green Taylor. She was married at Salt Lake City, December Decem-ber 23, 1872, to John Davis Powell, a native South Welshman and a pioneer of Utah In 1869. Sarah J. Powell was active in church work as long as her health would permit. per-mit. She was one of the first Sunday school teachers in Marriott and a Relief Society teacher while yet a girl. For twenty-olght yours she had suf- fered of rheumatism, being an invalid for tho greater part of that time. Surviving Sur-viving her are her husband and the following children, all residing at Marriott: Mar-riott: John Joyce, Thomas Ezra, Margaret, Mar-garet, Albert Joyce, Florence and Elsie Powell and Sarah Ann Buck. One child died In 1888. |
