Show STAGGERING BLOW FOB TBE SCHOOLS 'SALT LAKE, Nov. 20 How to make up time lost in the public schools through the enforced vacation of more than six weeks, caused by the operation opera-tion of the state health order, is a question ques-tion that for more than a week past has been given serious consideration by school superintendents and teachers. teach-ers. Speaking with respect to the loss of time and the consequent delinquency in work in all educational branches connected with tho required curriculum curri-culum of Salt Lake schools Superintendent Superin-tendent Ernest A. Smith yesterday, stated that every effort would be made to bring the work up to standard when tho schools opened again. He admitted that the task is one of colossal co-lossal proportion's, and that only by eliminating non-essential features of education can the essential and funda- mental details be brought up to a reasonable rea-sonable degree of perfection in the time reninining of the school year. "We have been hit a staggering blow and only by (he completest co operation opera-tion henceforth among parents, stud-nts stud-nts and the' educational faculties can we recover our academic equilibrium," Superintendent Smith declared yesterday. yester-day. To explained that the seriousness serious-ness of the situation, as it strikes at the educational institution of this city, had been fully realized by school heads and educational staffs for somo time and that in recent days definite plans have been made to meet in some degree, de-gree, at least, requirements brought about through the long term of school Inactivity. Meetings of school supervisors super-visors and teacher .groups of from oir to six persons connected with each school, have been hold daily during dur-ing the past ten days, and a conclusion has been arrived at which is expected expect-ed to put the education of pupils on a footing fairly in line with that provided pro-vided for a complete year of study. This plan, according to Mr. Smith, involves the divesting of school work of all its superfluities, such as social activities, entertainments and similar sido features and pay strict nttention only to the fundamentals of the year's work. |
