Show GLEAN OP THE FAR! TO PREVENT PLAIT i DISEASE Now is the time to clean up the farm for winter. So says the Committee on Agricultural Production of the Slate Council of Defense which met at tho Utah Agricultural College Monday, November IS. The following state ment was issued by the committee for the benefit of Utah farmers: While tho ground is yet bare or nearly so, intelligent farmers will lnakc cveiy effort to put tho final finish fin-ish on .preparing the farm, for winter. With the harvest completed, with byproducts by-products stored safely away, and with machinery under cover, clearing the fence lines, ditch banks, and odd corners cor-ners of weeds and brush Is most important im-portant work to be done before snow tucks In the farm for winter. Old weeds and brush are unsightly. They also shelter insects .and destructive rodents from the cold and snow. Let these bo cleared away nnd the land prepared for useful planting in the spring. Let fence wire and poles be fastened up before it Is too late. Tomato vines and cabbago stumps ought also to bo burned. These shol-tcr shol-tcr plant fiLeaaxa-s as well as insects. Tomato growers in particular should get rid of all tomato, vines lest the land be infected with disease for next year or lest animals or farm Implements Imple-ments scatter the vines over other land to infect it. The committee further calls attention atten-tion to the fact that any neglected corners cor-ners or old broken sod should be plowed before winter sets in This especially is important in order to make the best use of all land and to prevent damage of next year from cutworms cut-worms and wire-worms. Old ditches and abandoned fence lines ought by all means to be fall-plowed. Largo roots and sod' will then decay and loose dirt in the holes will settle-during the winter. Waste land along fences should be reduced to as small an area as possible by plowing close up. Finally, let the weds and loose wood or broken implements be removed re-moved from the yards and piled in one corner. This may save valuablo animals ani-mals "by removing the likelihood of their stepping on nails or bruising their feet or legs on sharp edges. oo- |
