Show They Established Boycotts Wherever the Use of Liquor Was Discouraged. WASHINGTON, Nov. 20. Waf waged by breviers against antagonistic antagonis-tic business houses and individuals was given special attention today by the senate committee investigating beer propaganda and the purchase of the Washingtpn Tlmps. Hugh H. Fox, secretary of the United Unit-ed States Brewers' association, was questioned at length by Major E. Lowr ly Humes, conducting tho examination for the conimittee. The witness; though denyjng thai the association had attempted a boycott, identified many letters and circulars sent to members regarding the auti-b'eer attitude atti-tude of certain firms nnd persons. "I think it was the intention of our association rather lo give preference to those who were our friends," said Mr. Fox. "I do not think tho association associa-tion took any action to cause a boycott." boy-cott." "You had on your unfair or blacklist black-list some of the biggest firms in the country," interposed Senator Overman, Over-man, "including the Cadillac company and tho Wauamaker companv." "The Cadillac company actually -rvas tho leader in the fight against us in their community," the witness replied. Action against the H. J. Heinz company com-pany followed the election of II. J. Heinz of Pittsburg, as president of the Pennsylvania State Sunday School association, as-sociation, at the convention of which prohibition sentiments, were expressed, according to a letter whiqh Fox said he wrote. Another letter showed that the American Rolling Mills, Ohio, was listed list-ed because of a poster against the use of liquor by its employes. Mr. Fox did not recall having listed tho Western Union Telegraph company com-pany becauso of its rule requiring total to-tal abstinence on the part of its employes. em-ployes. The Blackstone hotel of Chicago was listed because it did not join other hotels ho-tels in protesting against Sunday closing, clos-ing, accordipg to letters read bv Major Humes. Ope letter signed by Fox addressed ad-dressed to the brewing trade urged the members to stay away from the Blackstone. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western West-ern Railroad company was listed becauso be-causo of the promulgation of an order against the uso of liquor by its employes, em-ployes, Major Humes charged, but later a letter was senL by the railroad to its freight solicitors saying it did not object to its employes having liquor li-quor in their own homes.
