This was demonstrated during the war savings sav-ings stamp drive. It was haying and peach picking time but on the last day of the drive field hands and their overseers ov-erseers laid down their sythes and tramped a milo to the school house tc listen an hour to the speeches in Span-ish Span-ish and English explaining the war savings stamp system. When pledges were called for each of the 114 present signed cards, many Mexicans making their marks. San Jose's quota was $2,500. The pledges totaled $3,500. Many native farmers paid cash or pledged their hay or frull crops in payment for stamps. San Joso went over tho top and oversubscribed oversub-scribed her quota by $1,000. ,' |
