Show BASKETBALL j CONTESTS CLOSEj Game Becomes More Exciting as Divisions Narrow Down to Few Teams. SALT LAKE, Feb. 11. Tho high school basketball races in the majority of divisions havo now narrowed down to contests between a few teams. With but two more weeks of playing, tho contenders are in the best of shape for tho crucial battles. There has been few upsets thus far this season, and the favorites in all the divisions at the start aro holding their own In tho fight. According to present plans, all divisions should have their league schedule completed before February Feb-ruary 23 so that contests between sections sec-tions and divisions may bo played before be-fore March 2, which Is tho final date as decided by the board of control. Some difficulty is expected in some divisions. In section 2 of the Salt Lake division games have been scheduled ' for March 1. but It Is probable that tho : coaches will arrange to play those games earlier; as tho division title will ( probably be decided on March 1 and . 2. Tho northern division has games ; scheduled on March 1, but Inasmuch '. as there will probably be no section i games that schedule will be left as or- 1 iginally adopted. In the Nebo division I games have been arranged for March i 1. Games may bo played with the coal region champs, as well as tho tilt with 1 tho winner of the Alplne-Sanpete-Se- i vier divisions. In the Sanpete section of the Sanpete-Sevier division games la are scheduled to March 1, but all indications indi-cations point to tho completion of their schedule at least by February 20.- The difficulties arising from inconvenient in-convenient dates are expected to be ovorcome this week by the state officials, offi-cials, so that the divisions can make preparations for tho big battles. Boxelder Favorite. Although the Boxelder high school quintette has suffered one defeat, the Brigham City warriors arc strong favorites fav-orites for the northern division title. Coach Dave Wainsgard has a strong aggregation, and if successful in capturing cap-turing the division title it will mean the fifth straight year. Brigham City fans are boosting Delmar Tingey for all-state center this yeag. Tingey is one of tho best centers who has ever represented Boxelder and is playing his last year. Byron Cornia has shown to fine advantage in games to date. Boxelder has four more league games, two with Weber academy and one each with Davis county and South Cache. In soction 1 of the Salt Lake division tho L. D. S. U. has the lead and by tho end of the week may havo cinched tho title. The Saints have but three more games. There will bo one with Bingham Bing-ham on Wednesday and one with Granite Gran-ite Friday. Both are carded for the Deseret gymnasium. The Granitaians have lost one game, that to the L. D. S. U., and the Farmers are determined to win this week's game if possible, in which event the two schools would bo tied for the lead. Tooele has the pole in section lrace. The Smeltermen have finished tho first half of the season with three victories, vic-tories, while tho West high has two wins and one defeat. The Leopards have won only the Grant6ville contest Tooele still has two hard battles before be-fore the championship may be won. Friday the East high Leopards will be Tooele's opponents in the East high coop. The Salt Lake players believe that they can take Coach West's boys dawn the lino before a homo crowd. Expect Enormous Crovd. The most talked-of basketball game of the week will bo in the Alplno division divi-sion Friday, when American Fork and Lehl meet at Lehi in the final Ieaguo gamo of the season in that division. American Fork holds the lead with five victories and no defeats against Lohl's four wins and one defeat, so that if tho Sugar boys get the gamo, t will put tho two schools at a tlo far tho tltlo and a tie-off game will be necessary. In tho event that Ameri-;an Ameri-;an Fork wins. Coach Holmstead will Degln preparing his men for' the games vith' the Nebo division champs. Tho largest crowd that has attended l game In Utah this year Is expected at the Lehi contest. Plans are being made to accommodate a crowd of 2000. The B. Y. U. high school holds the lead in the Nebo division. Springvillc is second, having lost a game to the leaders. The present Indications aro that the title will not be decided until tho final game between the two schools, which is scheduled for March 1, and in the event of a Springvillc victory another game will be necessary. neces-sary. In the Sevier section Monroo has the upper hand, having beaten Richfield. Rich-field. Richfield is going p.t a fast clip and may be able to slip one over in the second contest, which will bo held in Richfield. The race in the Sanpete section is fairly close, with Moroni, North Sanpete and Snow Normal college col-lege playing good ball. The title In the northern half of the southern division has been practically won by the Millard stake academy of Hinckley. In the southern half Jack Chrlstensen's Branch Agricultural col-1 lego team is stepping right along and bids fair to take the section title. Games with Murdock academy and Parawan this week will complete tho Cedar City team's schedule and then arrangements will be made for tho division di-vision games. |
