Show I CHILD KILLED WHEN AUTO I ; STRIKES A SURREY IN WHICH I FAMILY IS DRIVING HOME !i Thelma Pickford, 7 -year-old daugh-1 daugh-1 1 tor of Mr. and Mrs. Parley J. Pickford of North Ogden, was killed last night, about G:30 o'clock at North Ogden, when the surrey in which she was rid-Hj rid-Hj ing with her fathef and two brothers was struck by an automobile driven by Osmund Ford, son of G. E Ford of Salt Lake. G. E. Ford Is vice-president of 1 the Merchant's Bank of Salt Lake and J1 was riding in the car with his son, who was driving. Thelma Pickford was occupying the rear seat of the surrey with her broth -er Ralph, her father and brother Ar-nold Ar-nold riding in the front seat, and when the rig was struck by the automobile f she was thrown out and the heavy ma-1 , chine passed over her body. The other three oc- ' cupants of the surrey were only slight-i slight-i i ly injured. .' Tho child was carried to a nearby i house, but died almost immediately. A 1 crowd of autornobllists gathered near the scene of the tragedy and the I mother was brought from her home to i the house where Thelma Pickford had 1 1 boen taken. Griefstricken and shock - , ed, she entered the home and upon finding that her daughter was dead, I collapsed and had to be placed in care of a nurse. 1 ! Dr. J. W. Pidcock and Sheriff H. C. ' Peterson arrived on the scene soon after the accident and the body of the little girl was taken to the Pickford i home. The slight Injuries to Mr. Pick-j Pick-j ford and Ralph Pickford werq also given attention, i Cause of Accident i The causo of the accident is attributed attri-buted to the fact that tho automobile I, driven hy the Fords had but one light, according to witnesses. Mr. Pickford stated that when the machine was approaching ap-proaching his surrey on the road ho thought it was a motorcycle and pulled far enough to the right of tho road to give such a vehicle room to pass. The light was so blinding, ho says, that ho could not distinctly see the approaching approach-ing machine and did not know it was an automobile until his horse reared to the side when the car was within a few feet of him. The crash followed so quickly that none of tho occupants of tho surrey had u chance to realize what was coming. The front part of the vehicle was badly damaged. The fathor with the three children had gone to the home of Mrs. Alma Roylance, aunt of the children, early In the afternoon, for a visit. They had started home about 5:30 o'clock. Thelma and Ralph sitting in the rear seat to hold two boxes of apples In place. When it was Been that the two ve hicles would collide, the automobile brakes were applied and the machine was quickly stopped but not until it had passed over the body of the little girl. The crash occurred a Bhort distance dis-tance from tho North Ogden canning factory. Mr. Ford rendered all possible assistance assis-tance to the victims of the nccident as soon as ho realized the situation and gave his name and address and the number of his automobile. Mr. Ford was not placed undor arrest and will appear whenever notified for an investigation. inves-tigation. Thelma Pickford was the only daughter of Parley James and Rosella Taylor Pickford. She was born March 7, 1910, In North Ogden. She is survived sur-vived by her parents and three brothers, broth-ers, Arnold, Ralph and Clarence. The body Is being prepared for burial by tho Lfndquist undertaking company. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. |
