Show 1ST THE OGDEN I "The Safety Curtain," which will be i shown at the Ogden theatre tomorrow & with the brilliant Select star Norma 1 Talmadgo, in a favorite emotional role, U tells the story of Puck, Norma Tal- B madge, a dancer in a cheap London music-hall, who is suddenly trans - B planted into army life at a Post in I Puck is- caught between the safety H curtain which drops behind her, and I an explosion in the audience, when m Capt. Merryon, from his box, sees her I plight. Ho leaps on to the stage and Puck remembering a secret passage- 1 way from the theatre to an unused D alley, is saved just before the walls of I the stage cave in. 1 Merryon takes her to his 'rooms R 'where he cares for her until morning. H In the earlv naners thev read of tho I disaster and Puck sees that her brutal bru-tal husband, Vulcan, who has often beaten her for fancied attentions to another man, is reported dead. Later in the list, however, she sees her own jiame and realizes that his name, too, may have been a mistake, and that she Is not yet surely free from him. However, without telling Merryon of her past, she consents to a marriage with Merryon and flees to India, i Fearing Vulcan, she begs that Mer ryon does not yet claim her as his wife, and except for the growing unrequited un-requited love for Puck, life runs happily. hap-pily. Vhcn the hot season begins and Puck 'is sent with the women of the colony to thp hills where she meets Sylvester, a young sport who had pursued pur-sued her while in London. He understands under-stands the situation and threatens to betray her to Merryon unless she yields to him, hinting that Vulcan is Puck flees, and Sylvester wires to Vulcan, who is in Bombay. Puck runs through the storm to. the Post to confess con-fess to Merryon, but her husband appears ap-pears before she has told the truth. At this same time cholera has broken out and. Merryon is called away to pre-1 vent tho natives from removing their! sick from the hospitals to a fakir's hut I for treatment. 1 Sick with worry over Puck's duplicity, duplici-ty, he hurries away, after Vulcan, telling tell-ing them that ho will await Puck's re- turn at Dak Bungalow, had left them. A note then arrives from Vulcan threatening to ruin Merryon and take Puck back by force unless she returns re-turns to him, and loving Merryon better bet-ter than herself, sho writes a note to him saying that sho ha3 returned to Vulcan and that she loves Merryon moro than anything else in tho world. Braving tho cruelty which she knows will be her reception, Puck goes through the storm, when M-erryon, arriving ar-riving homo and finding tho notes, seizes a revolver and hastens after her. vuican is 111 wun cnoiera anu nas been told that he is dying. Gathering together the strength to carry out his fearful threats, he reaches for a lash and rushes at h,er, just as Merryon rushes into the room. Vulcan towers over her, and as she turns to the man she loves rains blow after blow. But the exertion is too great, and as Merryon Mer-ryon takes her in his arms, the huge man falls at their feet. |
