Show j War Casualties! II (By The Associated Press ) I WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN H PRANCE, Aug- 19. The recent Mnrne n fighting lias illustrated the difficulties in prompt reporting of casualties. I . The system of keeping track of ev-I ev-I cry member of the American expeditionary expedi-tionary forces is simply organized, but it is gigantic. Facts concerning every casualty arc rushed by courier to tho central records office where a check is made against his name and record I I to prevent confusion and to identify him Then a message Is prepared and checked back and then cabled to Washington. In trench fighting and in small operations op-erations it is possible to make almost immediate casualty reports, hut in encounters, en-counters, as the Marnc battle, the task becomes difficult and slow, despite the best efforts of the authorities. The regulations require that every report of killed, wounded or missing must be established beyond a doubt. Units moving forward for hours under un-der heavy fire, losing men on the way cannot pause io check casualties. These must come later from dressing stations, hospitals or burying parlies operating in the wake of the advancing advanc-ing lines. I Frequently records and reports are J destroyed or lost in action. At Se!-rheprey Se!-rheprey a rectarin American unit was isolated for nearly two days by a H Heavy uerman uarragc. several luuiu- R bers of the unit sacrificed their lives V in an effort to penetrate the wall of 1 fire. Finally, a German raiding party I captured and mnde off with the or- n ganization's records. On another oc- W casion a statistical unit was bombed out of its position and its carefully pre- pared casualty reports were scattered H over the landscape. I Agalnr replacement troops may he H thrown into action with some organi- 9 flj zatlon being reformed for attack, the m unit commander having no knowledge I of who they are- True, if the records I are lost or destroyed by shell fire or bombing it becomes almost' impossible I ---k-PX1 I NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS.
