Show DECLARES U. S. HAS FORTIFIED AZORES AMSTERDAM, Nov. 19. Writing in the Berlin Neuestenachrichten, the German vice admiral, Kirchhosef, says : "The United States has established herself on the Azores and constructed fortifications at Punta Del Gada. The Azores are situated about two-thirds of the way between America and western Europe, and their occupation is important im-portant in connection with tho transportation trans-portation of the American army to Europe. "Tho Azores are connected with both mainlands by cable. Wireless stations which have long ranges are assisting in constant communication between the army, tho transport fleet and the homo government. A further aim of tho American government in this connection is Its desire to secure control of the great trade routes from Europe and North Africa to the Panama canal and the possibility of dominating the routes in future warsi By tho possession of tho Azores tho United States will be able to threaten the most Important German world ship routes and Interfere with connections with Germany's colonial possessions." WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 Official denial was made tonight that tho United 'Statca had taken possession of ihe Azores. Receipt of cable dispatches dis-patches that German Vice Admiral Kirchhosef had made such an assertion asser-tion recalled to administration, officials rumors which they denied some time ago. The Azores aro tho property of Portugal, Por-tugal, one of the .nations allied against Germany, and whatever military use may have been mado of them In combating com-bating German submarines which have operated in that section of the Atlantic -would be a part of Portugal's contribution to tho common cause against tho enemy. nn- |
