Show hi Ogden's first "Meatless Day" met with the general approval of the patrons of the cafes and restaurants of the city. A visit to restaurants in the main part of town today brings to light tho fact that It is a move strongly endorsed by the people and the proprietors state that they have been complimented on their patriotic attitude. atti-tude. "Several persons came in for breakfast break-fast this morning and ordered their customary ham and eggs or bacon and eggs,' said one of tho proprietors, "but when thoy were told that this was a meatless day. thoy readily ordered something else. There was not a single adverse criticism on tho removal re-moval of meats from tho menus. In fact, one man told me this morning that he was surprised that the plan had not been put in operation here in Ogden several weeks ago." Another manager stated that he thought the real trouble, if there was any, would come tomorrow, when "Wheatless Wednesday" is first tried out. "That is the thing that most people peo-ple will have tho hardest time to forego," he said. "White bread and pies and cakes have come to be such regular articles of food that tho lack of them may cause some complaint. However, I am sure that when tho patrons see that we mean business, they will soon fall in line and cease to ask for the things that are left off the menus." It is thought that if there is any hardships noted in serving meatless meals, they will come this evening. The evening meal is tho one when most people ask for steaks and chops and other meats and probably their absenco from the bill of faro will be tho most keenly felt. But with such delicious substitutes as chicken, duck and othor dishes of like description, it will not bo hard to satisfy tho most fastidious. In fact, the ones who are the most demanding in the choice of 1 their meals will be tho ones most easily satisfied with theso substitutes for meats. j Ono Incident that occurred this mnrnini? shows the attitude tho peoplo havo in regard to tho observance of meatless and wheatless days. A man went into ono of the leading cafos on Washington avenue and asked for a meat order. The waiter explained that this was meatless day and he straightway straight-way apologizod for his thoughtlessness in asking for meat, stating that he wna mighty glad that it was being observed ob-served and that ho was going one step farther and rorego the pleasures of meats on two or tbreo days a week. In that way, he stated, the war would be brought to an early close, as the best fighters were tho best fed mon and that tho United States Boldiers wore tho best fed men in tho war. He also predicted that before long everybody in the land would be conserving In somo way, not through force, but because be-cause the peoplo of the nation were waking up to the fact that tho" war is a serious proposition and that it will take the co-operation of overy patriotic citizen of tho United States to win out and save the world from an over-present menace of autocracy. Several menus for tomorrow's meals In Ogden cafes were seen this morning morn-ing and, while many people do not see how it will be possible to servo a really first-class meal without whlto bread, thoy are duo for a surpriso when they cat tomorrow. Somo of theso lists are a credit to the ingenuity of the men who planned them and, before be-fore many, wheatless days hayo passed. I it will not bo at all difficult to enjoy a meal without bread, biscuits, pies and enkes. However, pies havo not jbeen omitted, because they may be made with a small per cent of flour 'and are not a common article of food. |
