Gom-pers.' president of tho American Federation Fed-eration of Labor, arrived in Chicago today to testify in behalf of the employees' em-ployees' side In the stockyards' wage arbitration. He is to bo one of tho chief witnesses for tho men and will, It Is said, plead for adoption of tho basic eight hour day and higher wages for the employees of the packing industry. Permission was granted to representatives represen-tatives of the meat cutters' unions' representatives at Sioux City and Omaha to Inspect tho packing plants at thoso cities today. William Farr, general superintendent superintend-ent of Morris & company, was tho first witness In today's proceedings. He said he started with tho company 28 years ago as an employe He read a table of statistics showing the wages paid tho various classes of labor in the various plants which ho said wore in line with the pay of men and women wom-en performing similar work in other lines of industry. nn |
