Show AlET IS YUR8 v J BRIGHAM CITY. March 15. Death of Mathew W. Dallon of Willard occurred oc-curred at, his home there yesterday. Mr. Dalton was 80 years of age and was born in Madrid. St. Lawrence county New York, Nov. 1, 1S2S. He was ono of the best known men in northern Utah. He was a farmer and also devoted much time to the subject sub-ject of astronomy. He held a theory that the earth was composed of three spheres, one at each of tho two poles, and that tho lost ten tribes had taken refuge on one or both of Uiese spheres, and that when the proper time arrived arriv-ed for the restoration of tho ten tribes they would come down from tho north. He issued a book on this subject at one time. Mr. Dalton came to Utah in 1850, and was bound for California. Reaching Reach-ing Ogden on September 5, he decided to remain there over winter. In tho meantime he not alone became inter- ested and converted to Mormonism, but he met Rozilla Whitaker whom he married on December 5 of the same year. This completely changed his plans, and instead of going on to California Cali-fornia in the quest of gold, he came o Willard in 1853 and began farming. Ho Is said to have built one of the first two houses erected in Ogden. He was father of twelve children and also had forty-seven grandchildren, grandchil-dren, and fifty-four great-grandchildren at the time of his death. During his residenco in Utah Dalton porform-ed porform-ed six missions for tho 'dominant church. Four of these were to different differ-ent parts of this county; one to Mexico Mex-ico and one mission to England. He was a member for one term of the territorial ter-ritorial convention, for a number of years a captain of tho territorial militia, mili-tia, and also served in minor public capacities locally. Services will be held in tho Willard tabernacle Monday at 1 p. m. |
