Show , DEMPSEY WINS OVERJULTCN Former Utahn Sends Fulton Down in Twenty-three Seconds Sec-onds at New Jersey Park. Harrison Park. Newark, N. J., July 27. Jack Dcmpsey, formerly of Salt who claims California as his residential residen-tial state, won a surprisingly quick victory over Fred Fulton, the Rochester, Roches-ter, Minn., heavyweight in twenty-three twenty-three seconds at the Harrison baseball park here this evening. The moment the bell sounded Demp-sey Demp-sey rushed at Fulton landing n hard right swing under the heart and hooking hook-ing his left to the stomach. These blows made Fulton wince and the bigger big-ger man was unable to defend hiin- self with Dempsoy at such close quarters. quar-ters. Fulton's long arms swung helplessly help-lessly over Dempsoy's head but Dempsoy Demp-soy sent in two short arm body blows. Then he stepped back about a foot and hooked his left to the Rochester giant's head and swung his right to the point of Fulton's jaw. The big man tottered tot-tered and fell sideways to tho floor of the ring, his head resting on his right arm which pinned down tho lower low-er rope of tho three which encircled the ring. There was scarcely a sound from Hie big crowd of spectators when the referee began counting the seconds sec-onds over the prostrate man. Fulton tried ineffectually to raise his head and body with his right arm as a lever but as. the count progressed his head fell back again almost near the side n" the ring floor. There he lay until j Eckhardt tolled the ton seconds, after which Fulton's seconds actually dragged their man to his corner. Dempsey in the meanwhile was easily the most composed man In the ring or the arena. He walked over to Fulton's corner and took the big fellow by the hand, but Fulton was too dazed to talk coherently and seemingly seem-ingly was unable to realize what had happened in 'such a brief space of time. rr |
