Show It NORWEGIANS SEEK I AMERICA'S GOODS 1 i i I AN ATLANTIC PORT, July 26. An official food commission made up of I seven prominent Norwegians and headed by Dr. Fridtjoff Nansen, the Arctic explorer, recently named by i their government to arrange with the i United States a working agreement I for the importation of needed food- j stuffs, arrived here today on a Danish i t' steamship from Copenhagen. i The members of the commission are i men selected as authorities and ex- t perts from various industries of Nor- 1 way and have brought with them i carefully prepared and officially ap- t proved detailed statements to show the authorities at Washington just what Norway needs and in what quantity quan-tity to provido for the food wants of their country. Their aim is, if possible, pos-sible, they said, to arrange an agreement agree-ment with this country similar to the ono now in effect between Norway and Great Britain for the exchange of commodities and tho use of tonnage. Dr. Nansen, in an intervlow on board tho ship, was emphatic In his assertion that Norway Is not providing provid-ing Germany or tho central powers with grain or fats. About the only commodity that is sold to Germany, ho asserted, is fish, and that In a quantity much less than what Is sold to the entento powers. Dr. Nansen confirmod previous ro-ports ro-ports that Norway has lost through tho submarine warfare approximately 30 per cent of Its merchant fleet, or about 800,000 tons. Ho added that all of Norway's merchant vessels were now engaged In trading between tho home country and the United States, or between tho United States and countries of tho entente. oo |
