Show FRENCH LOOK ID : 1 i Roads in Devastated Region to Be Repaired by Men ! From America. PARIS, May 27. Albert Claveille, undersecretary of transportation, who now has charge of all transportation jjr, in the zone of the French armies up to tho front as well as the rear, has just returned from an inspection of the railroads, canals and highways in the regions recently evacuated by the Germans. Ger-mans. "The Germans carried off even the steel rails and the railroad ties," said M. Clavielle today, talking to the Associated As-sociated Press of his visit. "The roadbed road-bed and baflast remain almost intact. Otherwise, the destruction in stripping the railroad lines was about as me- - thodical and complete as might be imagined. All highway as well as railroad bridgos were badly damaged or destroyed, as were turntables, water tanks and switch mechanisms. Even articles that would have been of no . advantage or comfort to our army were taken away, which seems to indicate indi-cate thoro is a pressing need in Germany Ger-many for everything in the shape of metal." The destruction of canal locks, M. Clavielle said, was quite as complete as the damage done to railroads. All canal boats also wero broken up and every means available was used for obstructing the channels. "The best service that could be rendered ren-dered to France by the regiment of fH engineers now being organized in tho i!ym United States of America," said M. m Clavielle, "would bo to bring over here as soon as convenient tools and equipment necessary to repair those railroads, canals and bridges. They should bring not only the required tools now unobtainable here, but also laborers familiar with that kind of work and capablo of quick productive ( efforts." 00 |
