Show H QUIT WORK AT PACKING HOUSE , PLANT Following a readjustment In the working hours ot tho Ogden Packing and Provision company today, made in conformity with a majority vote of the company's employes, a number of men left their positions this morning. The result was that rumors of a strike having occurred were circulated Officials of tho company promptly denied the reports, stating that the men had simply quit their positions and had not struck. The number leaving the packing plant was not large, tho officials stated, and in no way affected the operation of the plant. Under the new working hours, employes em-ployes will quit work on Saturday at 3 o'clock and will make up the three hours' time by lengthening worknlg hours durirfg tho week. Demands of the Men. After the employes of the packing company left their work this morning, a meeting was held and a committee of five appointed to act in executive capacity. Another meeting will be held tonight. Tho executive committee stated that the men objected to working 10 1-2 hours per day, which they claim will be required of them for five days of tho week under tho new rules. The men said that the Increase of time is not satisfactory, but that instead they demand .a nine-hour day at the same wages for which they havo been working work-ing 10 hours. Thoy claim that 40 men, Including machinists, blacksmiths, electricians, pipe fitters and helpers are involved in the walkout and that others will Join them tonight There are now about 300 employes at the plant. The emplojes say that the prevailing scale of wages has been $2 50 for 10 hours' work for helpers and laborers and from $2 75 up for mechanics. oo - |
