Prices of III foodstuffs are going so high as to cause I I uneasiness, and the car shortage on j the railroad forecasts a winter during which the coal supply may be a source of worry. I Over in Colorado the car shortage l Is now being felt and one of the U Denver papers states that a loss of j hundreds of thousands of dollars II S worth of crops is imminent in Col- orado through lack of railroad cars to I move waiting shipments. And the livestock growers II also are sending forth a desperate p wail. Colorado's prosperity is seri- ously threatened, j ! Heads of the railroads in Colorado IJ! say they have no cars, but are doing III ! everything within human, power to ! H i j get cars. They say most of their roll- I ing stock is tied up on hidings along I llll the Atlantic seaboard, filled with Ifi" ' goods awaiting ships for Europe, and llllll that no amount of persuasion or penal- III i can ge" -nese 031:8 unloaded and J 111 I started back West. I llll The situation in Colorado has be- como so serious that several largo shippers, such as the Great Western Sugar company, have Issued. appeals to other shippers to Join in a general movement for the speeding of freight cars on their way. Heads of the sugar company urge all firms receiving receiv-ing carload shipments to find out in advance how long it will take to unload un-load thoso cars and then have suffi-cierifcvhibor suffi-cierifcvhibor or machinery on hand ready "V do the work in the fewest number of minutes, so the cars can start back from' whence they came without an hour's delay. They urge that the detention of a single freight .car for an hour and a half "when It actually is needed only one hour at the unloading point, means serious loss to other shippers. At the Ogden headquarters of coal mines In Wyoming the statement is made that it is almost impossible to get the required number of cars to move coal which has been ordered. The end of the fruit crop is being moved from California, livestock ls being rushed to market and beets are being transported. A littlo later the cars used in that traffic can be employed' em-ployed' in convoying coal, and it is possible the threatened shortage will not develop. This is the time though for far-seeing housewives to be storing coal for the cold days of January. |
