PRESIDENT OF ITIB1L RETAIL I HCHITS s d m o y Sol Westerfield of Chicago, vice P president of the National Retail Mer-, Mer-, chants' association, was an Ogden " visitor yesterday and last night, and addressed a meeting of the local Mer-l Mer-l chants' association at the City Hall. 1 He was welcomed at the meeting by Mayor A. It. Heywood, who invited '' him to come to the city often and assured him that he would always 2 find a hearty welcome here. The mayor also referred to Ogdcn's strong association and declared its success was due to co-operation and education 1 of Its members. ! In rosponsc, the visitor expressed 1 appreciation for the courteous treat-r treat-r ment he had received while in the 5 city and admiration for the Ogden Retail Merchants' association. Ho praised, in particular, the work of J. , S. Carver, trustee of the national as-. as-. soclation, President Fred E. Williams i of the state association, and the of-j of-j ficers of the Ogden and state associations, associa-tions, for the work they had done in organizing and holding the merchants together. "The success of tho retail mer-! mer-! chants In Ogden," he saia, "is due to the class of officers they have and to the fact that co-operation exists be-! be-! tween the retailer and the manufacturer manufac-turer and jobber. Where co-operation exists thero we find success. The leaders In an organization can make it a success but in Ogden I find an Interest and harmony provailing that indicates the merchants to individually individual-ly possess the sterling qualities that not only mark them as being good followers but as future leaders." Speaking further, Mr. Westerfield said the churches, societies and anything any-thing for the public good should receive re-ceive the support of the merchants, , but that support should not go Into program advertising. In this regard, he advocated the selection of a committee com-mittee of three in the association to pass upon the nature of the advertisement advertise-ment requests. If the proposition was or was not of real merit, the committee commit-tee should so report. James S. Carver, In a brief address, ' said the local association was always pleased to have n visit from a national na-tional officer and that the remarks of Mr. Westerfield had been much enjoyed. en-joyed. Continuing, he referred to , the possibility of a great railroad strike and said that the merchants ' should act to prevent it, if their services serv-ices could be used. Cor-cluding, he urged the merchants to co-operate with the national, state and city organizations or-ganizations and with the jobbers for the benefit of all. Heber Scowcroft, a member of the executive board of the National Job-bers' Job-bers' association, said he had enjoyed the remarks of the vsitor and assured him that in Ogden he would find the finest spirit of co-operation between manufacturer, jobber and retailer that exists anywhere In the country. "Here, the talk and carrying into practice of co-operation is carried on all the time," ho said, "and there is no city where harmony prevails as it does in Ogden." J. S. Campbell spoke of the jobber's 1 position between the merchant andi the manufacturer and of the continued efforts at co-operation. J. H. Harper of Salt Lake City, publisher of the Utah ' Retail Merchant, Mer-chant, and X. A. Gay, of the Shupe-Wllliams Shupe-Wllliams Candy company, also made brief talks. S. S. Jensen, of the Utah Manufacturers' Manufac-turers' association, declared the Ogden Og-den Retail Merchants' association to be one of the strongest .in the coun- try. "Its members,': ho said, "are not afraid to demand their rights' and the 1 association does not hesitate to call ; the manufacturer or jobber on the carpet if they think they have a griev- ance. The merchants here, if they ! find a home-manufactured article has merit, becomes its most ardent boost- 1 er:.
