It was indicated jl that state department officials were n satisfied with the situation and the M jH appointment of American commission- m ers might be expected any time, M Mr. Arredondo assured Secretary : Polk that General Carranza's state- j ment in his last note that the com- mlssioners preferrably would discuss j the subjects outlined in the original proposal merely meant that prefere- i ence would bo given to the border j situation but that other questions v were not excluded. He said also that he regarded the last Mexican note as one of complete compliance with ; American suggestions and it was on ; that basis that Mr. Polk took the mat- j ter to the cabinet.
