Show FIVE HUNDRED MEN ARE , I EMPLOYED AT PLANT I .. ACROSS THE VIADUCT' I f More than 500 men are now being employed at the Ogden Packing and Provision company and the Ogden Union stockyards. Including the forces of contractors who are' at work completing com-pleting the immense new plant and the stockyards, and also the employes of the packing plant itself. With increases in-creases of forces for the grading, building and finishing work, the contractors con-tractors anticipate that both the new packing house and also the stockyards can be utilized to full capacity within a very few weeks. Shipments are constantly arriving and this morning word was received at the packing house offices that the first load of ammonia pipe for the new addition was on the way! Eight miles of this pipe will be used in tho pork packing division alone, not counting count-ing the immense amount in the present pres-ent plant. Compressors Arrive. Ammonia compressors for the new addition have been received. These, like all other equipment in the building, build-ing, will be electrically driven and the motors are now being ordered. As a result of this decision for electrically, electric-ally, driven equipment throughout the packing house, the company will be one of the heaviest purchasers of electricity elec-tricity In the state, rivaling a number num-ber of the cities and exceeding other commercial enterprises. Grading for the stockyards of the Ogden Packing and Provision company, com-pany, just across Weber river from the packing plant, has been finished and the James Stewart & Co. force is now laying concrete, while posts for the pens are being placed and the sheep, hog and cattle barns will soon be erected. The contractors report that concrete work can be continued for some time with proper protection given as the surface is placed. Another force of workmen is busy In the new yards of the Ogden Union Stockyards company, where the grading grad-ing is being finished and concrete will be started tomorrow. Covering the Bridge. The concrete for the sheep, hog and' cattle runs to the plant from the Weber We-ber river bridge, being built by the company, is now being placed. The runs, Including the new bridge, will be completely -covered from the weather. Finishing of the sixteen smoke houses that make up part of the new plant is being rushed and crews are busy throughout tho building adding the final touches of building. These Include the erecting of a ninety-foot smokestack, the placing of great walls for the freezers, the insulating of the interior with cork, the building of loading platrorms, installation of ma-chinery ma-chinery and piping, together with fl-nal fl-nal brick work on the upper floors of the large structure. Part of the building is now in use, storage rooms having been finished on the lower floors, while the entire tank house is being utilized. IH The only difficulty the company . seems to face now is the possible in-' ability to secure sufficient hogs in the IH intermountain country to operate the IH plant to Its capacity. However, the of- IH ficials of tho company stated today that they would not only endeavor to stimulate the hog raising industry in Utah and Idaho, as far as possible, but that they would go to Nebraska again, if necessary, to secure sufficient hogs lH to keep the plant operating to its full capacity from the time that it is com-pleted. |
