Show ADMITS LOSS Paris, April 2, 11:40 p. m. The Germans Ger-mans launched heavy attacks again to day against the French positions, both to the weBt and east of the Meuse. To the west the attack was repulsed, but to the east, in the neighborhood of Fort Douaumont, the assaulting forces for-ces were able to penetrate the Cail-lette Cail-lette wood, lying to tho south. From the northern part of the wood they were almost immediately ejected by French counter-attacks. The official statement on these operations op-erations issued tonight by the war office, reads: "Between the Sommo and the Oise our artillery was particularly active in the region of Parvillers, Pouquescourt and Lassigny, where German trenches were shattered by our fire. "West of the Meuso the Germans launched several powerful attacks on a corner of the Avocourt wood. All the assaults wore repulsed by our barrier fire and the lire of our machine ma-chine guns. "To the east of the Meuse tho action ac-tion was very spirited throughout the day in tho region of Douaumont and Vaux. Tho Germans, after a bombardment bom-bardment of extreme violence with shells of heavy caliber, directed four simultaneous attacks with effectives of more than one division on our positions posi-tions between Fort Douaumont and the village of Vaux. Southeast of Fort Douaumont they penetrated Call-lette Call-lette wood, but our counter-attacks delivered de-livered immediately drove them back In the northern part of the wood. South of Vaux our line runs along tho Immediate outskirts of the village, the last ruined houses of which we have evacuated. "In the Woevre there has been intermittent in-termittent artillery activity in tho Bols Le Pretre. An aviatik, brought down by our special guns, fell within ' tho German llneH. "In tho Vosgcs the fire of our batteries bat-teries caused tho explosion of a munitions mu-nitions depot east of Reich Acker-kopf, Acker-kopf, west of Muonster. "Last nig'ht a bombftnflnq.uad- ron dropped twrenty-eight shells on tho railroad station at Etain and the bivouacs established in the outskirts of the village of Mantillois. The same night three of our aeroplanes dropped twenty-two shells, which caused num erous fires in the villages Azannes and Brisulles, on the Meuse. "Today (April 2) our aviators brought down three enemy machines on the Verdun front Two other Gorman Gor-man aeroplanes were compelled to land precipitately in the same region Finally a Drachen was brought down In flames by one of our aeroplanes. The Belgian official communication reads: "The Belgian artillery bombarded during tho night the German positions at Merckeu. Today there was a violent vio-lent artillery action in the sector of Ramscapelle and in the direction of Dlxmude. nn |
