Show FUMICATING BY NEW METHODS. New methods of ridding ships of mice, mosquitoes, fleas and plague germs have been adopted by the United Uni-ted States health service, a description descrip-tion of which is given in a bulletin lately issued. Instead of sulphur or charcoal gases, as heretofore, pnis-sic pnis-sic acid gas is employed in fumigation fumiga-tion Barrels, containing diluted sulphuric-acid, sulphuric-acid, are placed in the holds of ships, and. through a hose cyanide in strong solution is poured down into the barrel of acid The gas is rapidly developed, devel-oped, and mixing with the air, renders the atmosphere fatal to almost all forms of animal life, including the rat and the flea A valuable characteristic character-istic of hydrocyanic acid is, that tin-like tin-like the older fumigating gases, it rapidly and completely penetrates almost al-most all articles of cargo, killing the vermin contained therein without damaging dam-aging the ship or cargo. In practice the method described has proven efficient ef-ficient against the carriers of plague, safe in competent hands and under proper precautions, very rapid. It is prophesied that this mothod will be much more widely used In the future. |
