Show oo I REPORTS ALSACE PEOPLE STARVING Paris. Sept. 1. 5 p. m. The following follow-ing dramatic account of conditions e j istlng in Alsace and Lorraiue is given giv-en by Abbe Wetterle, who represent ed Alsace in the reichstag. "As soon as martial law was declared de-clared by Germany 1000 of the best known ( Itlzens in Alsace and Lorraine Lor-raine were arrested as hostages and marched handcuffed through the streets. "Some of them were thrown into prison and others summarily shot. "When the Germans returned to Mulhausen, after the first evacuation, pilaglng. incondiarlBm and shooting occurred throughout the town. In one Instance some of the inhabitants were placed against a wall and shot, without with-out the semblance of court martial "This outrage was meant as a warn ing to the rest of the population. The 'Germans burned fifty houses at Burzemiller, only sparing the Inn, which they quickly emptied of drinkables drink-ables and edibles. "Alsace Is at present practically starving, all provisions being seized by the Germans." |
