Butte, Mont , Sept 2 With a mMd term of martial law prevailing here all was quiPt today in tho city and at the mines. Notice has been "given by the militia that should the slight est trouble occur, rigid military rule would be established forthwith and that has had a quieting effect. The Anaconda mine, which employs em-ploys 730 men, and which shut down a week ago because of factional troubles trou-bles among the miners, resumed op erations today with a full force. Thr Mine Workers' union committee failed to appear at the Anaconda mine and all men who appeared for work were sent Into the mine regardlens 0f union uni-on affiliations Placards posted 'at mine shafts by the mine workers committee, warning miners not to go to work unless they wore the new union's button, were torn down. Full crews worked all night at the Nagnon and Original mines which were closed yesterday. Major D. J Donohue, commanding the stale troops encamped here, declared de-clared today that the police and sheriff's sher-iff's officers would continue their duties, du-ties, but the state troop9 would take charge the ln3tant any necosslty arose Helena, Mont . Governor Stewart has not asked for troops In the manner prescribed by the constitution and until such an appeal is made the troopers will remain at Fort Harrison The constitution requires that fed eral troops may be sent on duty In a state only when the governor declares de-clares he is unable to master the sit nation with the state militia. |
