Show REED SMOOT PUCEO IN NOMINATION BY 1CMM Salt Lake, Sept 1. United States Senator Reed Smoot has again declared de-clared yesterday to he the unanimous choice of the Republican party of Utah to represent the state in the upper house of Congress When the : name of Senator Smoot was mention ed in the nominating speech of Ben L j Rich, the entire strength of the con ventlon arose and cheered Senator Smoot to the echo. Delegates everywhere every-where waved their arms and shouted Joyously. The spectators in the boxes and in the rear of the theater Joined In the general demonstration. The band struck up "The Star Spangled Ranner " and the enthusiasm of eery person in the convention hall was given unrestrained expression Utah, the home county of Senator Smoot, launched the demonstration From their seats on the stage the fifty-three delegates from Utah county jumped to their feet, unfurled a large banner bearing tbe words, "victory Is Ours. We Are for Utah and Smoot." and began to parade about the convention con-vention hall From beneath their coats the Utah county delegates brought forth American flags and proceeded pro-ceeded to keep time with the music of the band, or what could be heard of the music, above the din as they marched around the theater. Before Senator Sutherland finished fin-ished putting the question a mingled chorus of hoarselv shouted ayes I sounded through the hall and again the delegates and spectators took up the cry of "Smoot " When Senator Sutherland announced that Senator Reed Smooth had been nominated again "to lead the Republican party to victory'' the demonstration was as great, if not greater, than when the senior senator's name was first mentioned men-tioned on the floor of the Convention. Before the afternoon after-noon session of the convention was called to order rumors were afloat that Judge Howell Had decided not to enter the race, but It was still believed be-lieved that Judge Lewis would go before be-fore the convention. W. M. McCarty Presented. Carl A. Badger nominated Chief Justice W. M. McCartv in a short address ad-dress in which be paid a tribute to the judicial opinions of the incumbent. incum-bent. Then followed a demonstration for Chief Justice McCartv He was nominated by acclamation and the delegates clamored for a speech from him. Justice McCartv made a short address from his place in a box in the theater. For state superintendent of public instruction A. C. Matheson was nom inated amid great enthusiasm. It was thought Dr. E. G. Gowans' name would be presented to tho convention, but the Keamsdemocrats did not carry out their program nf seeking to induce the Republicans to consider him as a candidate. r |
