Amsterdam Am-sterdam and Copenhagen, who, It Is stated, are working on German account. ac-count. Directions at the same time are given that these consignments of copper arc to be shipped through Italian ports to the order of various financial Institutions, which are said to be controlled largely by German capital. American copper refiners appear ap-pear io bi capable of protecting their own interests, since they usuall insist in-sist on payment in cash before they allow the copper to be shipped The British goernmcnt is determined deter-mined that it will use every legitimate legiti-mate means to prevent copper reaching reach-ing Germany, where It is being made ino ammunition for use against the British forces Great Britain, therefore, there-fore, is diverting various steamers which are carrying copper to Italy, to Gibraltar where the copper is discharged. dis-charged. The steamers are promptly released. Sumo of this conner has been found packed in cases marked for Danzig Other lots are shipments made on orders or-ders through German houses in Amsterdam Am-sterdam and Rotterdam. Some ot these houses are said to be connect ed with the Krupps, manufacturers of big una It is understood that representatives representa-tives of some big copper refining firms recently sailed from New York for Europe with the object of con-suiting con-suiting agents of German firni6 as to the best means of forwarding copper cop-per to Germany. Italian firms also have been approached by German purchasers of copper with a view of arranging for the use of the names of the former for the purpose of concealing con-cealing the fact that American copper shipped to the purchasers is destined for Germany. Since October 2 vessels bound from New York for Italy, having on board a total of 7700 tons of copper, have been diverted to Gibraltar and the British goxernment Is informed that some thousands of tons additional addi-tional are now en route to Italy. The larger part of these copper shipments W( re for Genoa. Official returns just published show that for two and one half months prior to October 19 Imports Im-ports of copper Into Genoa amounted to only 1316 tons. A comparison of these figures with the more recent shipments shows, it is said, that the present trade in copper with Italy is entirely an artificial one. and that the Italian imports are not for the consumption of that country. Will Pay for Cargoes In view of all this accumulative evidence the British government j maintains that there is no alternative : left it but to stop this alleged contraband con-traband trade in copper, with Germany Ger-many through Itah With a few possible pos-sible exceptions exporters do not suffer suf-fer as they have been paid already; the British goernment. not wishing to be unreasonable In any way, is prepared, so far as concerns shipments ship-ments made before October 29, when copper was transferred from the conditional con-ditional to the actual contraband list, to arrange for the purchase of copper cop-per which it has detained. |
