Show WHAT THE WAR NEWS DISCLOSES. H. M. Tomlinson, a war correspon dent, with the British troops in the northwest part of France, where heavy fighting has been on for a week, holds to the opinion that the Gcmians have been outfought and outgeneraled, out-generaled, and he makes this state incut : "The position of the Germans In France now Is that they have been thrown back almost as far as their lines of communication Their battles bat-tles are direct efforts to keep open their lines of retreat. It has come to that, and the public is entitled to know. One need not assume. In consequence con-sequence that the Germans wlU be out of France in the next five minutes. min-utes. They aro a very formidable enemy, but one niay certainly assume that the superior generalship of the -nllles and far better quality of our men have at last maneuvered the Germans Into a position from which the enemy will have enormous difficulty diffi-culty in extricating himself and if he is unable to do so it may possibly result re-sult in his ruin " Thero is nothing in the dispatches from Paris or Berlin to indicate that Mr Tomlinson Is right in assuming that the Germans are in a tight corner cor-ner From the junction of the rivers Oise and Aisne, to which they retreated, re-treated, the Germans hold an unbroken un-broken front safeguarding their lines of communication north in to Belgium Were the Kaiser's forces to retreat, they would move along tho Meuse river, which is 60 miles east of the allied armies at St. Quentin, Arras and Armentieres. The Germans, in our opinion, occupy occu-py a position of much strength along their entire right wing. They could be endangered only by a swift movement move-ment through their north and south line at some point near rras. While the Germans are well post tioned. the allies are equally well placed, and the effect of the movement move-ment of the allies along the German light has been to draw the invaders out of France. While three weeks ago the heavy fighting was on the Alsne. near Soissons, today the most violent attacks and counter-attacks ere near the Belgium border as a re suit of the Kaiser withdrawing troops from the center to prevent his flank being turned. |
